“In this book, not only is there no happy ending, there is no happy beginning and very few happy things in the middle.”
This is the uplifting start to Lemony Snicket’s The Bad Beginning. If you thought it would get happier, you’re mistaken. It does get fascinating. In honour of #ThrowbackThursday, I’m featuring one of my favorite children’s series.
There’s 13 books in the entire collection of A Series of Unfortunate Events. They’re well worth a listen. They’re dark but funny. If you’re new to the series, here’s an introduction to the first book, A Bad Beginning:
“Are you made fainthearted by death? Does fire unnerve you? Is a villain something that might crop up in future nightmares of yours? Are you thrilled by nefarious plots? Is cold porridge upsetting to you? Vicious threats? Hooks? Uncomfortable clothing?
It is likely that your answers will reveal A Series of Unfortunate Events to be ill-suited for your personal use. A librarian, bookseller, or acquaintance should be able to suggest books more appropriate for your fragile temperament. But to the rarest of readers we say, ‘Proceed, but cautiously.'”
Thanks to HarperAudio, you can preview the audiobook with this clip of Tim Curry’s eerie performance of A Bad Beginning. Tim Curry does a fabulous job too.
