Vancouver startup launches personalized book recommendations for readers on the Shelfie app.
February 16, 2016 (Vancouver, BC) — Today, Shelfie launches personalized book recommendations in a new twist on Amazon’s familiar “people who bought this also bought.” Shelfie uses the patterns of how tens of thousands of readers have shelved millions of books to produce personalized recommendations based on “people who own this book put it on a shelf beside.”
“At Shelfie, we think that the best book recommendations come from two things: one a full picture of the books you actually own, not just the ones you bought online, and two the way that readers naturally organize their books,” said Shelfie CEO and co-founder, Peter Hudson.
Most recommendation engines are limited by purchase data; they can only offer books based on the books somebody bought (e.g. Nook) or bothered to upload (e.g. Goodreads)… Shelfie’s model considers a reader’s entire bookshelf – no matter if the books were bought online, offline, or received as gifts. Plus, Shelfie uniquely captures the way readers organize their books. While you’re unlikely to ever find Douglas Adams’ The Salmon of Doubt on a bookstore shelf next to Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere, that’s exactly how thousands of readers organize their shelves at home.
On Shelfie, readers can view their full list of recommendations or explore through genres to discover new and new-to-them books. Quite simply, Shelfie has built a better book recommendation.
In addition to providing better book recommendations, Shelfie gives readers access to free or highly discounted digital and audio editions of the books in their print library. By taking a photo of their bookshelf (a “shelfie”), readers can identify a list of books eligible for digital bundles on over 250,000 titles from over 1200 partner publishers including HarperCollins, Macmillan, and Hachette.
Shelfie is free and can be downloaded for iOS and Android. Founded in 2013 as BitLit Media Inc. by Peter Hudson and Marius Muja, Shelfie is headquartered in Vancouver, BC, Canada. www.shelfie.com
